On Saturday 17th June, Rotaract Malta La Valette organised Work Hard Play Hard - Bringing Your Ideas to Life – a half-day seminar at the Santana Hotel, focusing on Entrepreneurship. Key experts shared their insight into the factors that are essential for developing and bringing a business idea to life.
Topics included “The importance of validating a business idea” by Professor Louis Naudi, Ambassador for and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing in Malta; “Born-Global Entrepreneurs” by Ing. David J. Dingli, Assistant Professor at Maastricht School of Management; “What leadership qualities can start-ups learn from established Businesses” by Ing. Joseph Caruana, owner of Tuning Fork Ltd. and Inspectra Ltd.
These talks were followed by a panel discussion moderated by Ing. David J. Dingli, where five young entrepreneurs shared their business experiences with the participants; Marcus Zarb-Cousin, Director and Managing Pharmacist at Anici Pharmacy & Medical Centre (Qormi); Mark George Cardona, Founder and Director at MGC Distributors Ltd (Essentials Wholesale-dealing); Daniel Mangion, co-owner and Operations Manager of a fresh pasta business – GourmetAKD; Yasmin deGiorgio, founder of The Grassy Hopper, Theobroma Cacao Collective and Sanya Eco Spa; and Greta Borg Bezzina, co-owner and Operations Director of eCABS.
The Seminar concluded with a workshop on “Empowering Entrepreneurs” led by Dr. Leonie Baldacchino, Director of the Edward De Bono Institute at the University of Malta. Conclusions drawn from the workshop focused on how mentoring and international exposure can help young people to run and grow their business successfully, how education and coaching can push more young people to become entrepreneurs, and the importance of incubators.
Attendees had multiple opportunities to network with the speakers, as well as with fellow participants during coffee breaks and lunch.
Talk in Collaboration with the Malta Dyslexia Association: Dyslexia, Stress & Anxiety - Championing It
Would you run a race, with a pebble in your shoe? Many prefer not to, however, sometimes you do not have a choice. This is the metaphorical challenge people with a profile of Dyslexia face. On Wednesday 22nd February 2017, Rotaract Malta La Valette, thanks to Mrs Carmen Muscat, Chairperson of the Malta Dyslexia Association, explored how profiles of Dyslexia relate to education and psycho-social development. Over 35 attendees, including members from the Lino Spiteri Foundation, were present for this informative session.
Persons with a profile of Dyslexia may experience increased levels of anxiety and stress. This, however, is more likely to occur because of the way such profiles are understood. Despite all myths and misunderstandings, persons with a profile of Dyslexia can flourish in the right environment which offers adequate support and coaching. It is therefore of extreme importance that such profiles are understood to truly own, overcome and champion the challenge of Dyslexia. Research indicates that visualisation, brain training, memory enhancers and addressing neuroplasticity are effective in addressing the challenges faced.
At the end of the session, each attendee received a free copy of the book entitled 'd pebble in my shoe', which narrates the inspiring stories of eight teenagers who have run the examination race with a pebble in their shoe. This book was funded by the Erasmus+ project and is available from the Malta Dyslexia Association.
Rotaract Malta La Valette would like to thank Matilda's Cafe and Bistro for their collaboration in hosting this event.
Rotaract Malta La Valette successfully raised €137.95 during a Bake Sale held on 18th December, 2016. The funds are going towards Dar Merhba Bik, Balzan. 300 mince pies and 300 ginger bread stars were sold in front of the Zejtun Parish Church during the morning. The plan was to move to Sliema in the afternoon, however, all the mince pies and gingerbread stars were sold by noon!
During the Bake Sale, Rotary Club La Valette Malta President, Rtn. David J. Dingli, visited us to give us his support and buy some mince pies and gingerbread stars himself. Rtn. Federico Milanetti and Rtn. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Zejtun Parish Church for giving us permission to hold the Bake Sale as well as for the help given during this event. We would also like to thank all the people who visited our stand for their generosity in helping us raise €137.95 for Dar Merhba Bik!
